Title: Materials Evaluation in Actual Classroom Use: A Case Study
Presenter: Ania Gonzalez
Summary: This presentation will discuss a case study evaluating the Learning World 1 coursebook package in a Japanese eikaiwa classroom with young learners aged 6-8. The study examined how teachers and learners responded to and interacted with the materials and how effective the in-lesson implementation was in promoting learning in the classroom. The study combined data analysis from classroom observation and the teachers' responses to a questionnaire with an assessment of the materials’ appropriateness based on the criteria developed by Ghosn (2019). While effective, the study highlights a potential overreliance on the coursebook, limiting language learning opportunities. The presentation explores these insights and proposes modifications to optimise the materials for more effective language learning in the classroom.

Title: Using Digital Tools in the Classroom: The Case of Classical Japanese and Japanese Palaeography
Presenter: James Harry Morris
Summary: Based on the presenter's experience, this presentation will explore some of the tools available for the educator teaching classical Japanese and Japanese palaeography. It will include an introduction and guide to the transcription platform, Minna de Honkoku, and provide a guide to tools available and methods to create one's own materials.

Title: Pedagogically Sound Online Learning of Vocabulary Through the New General Service List Project
Invited Presenter: Charles Browne
Summary:In this session the presenter will briefly introduce his New General Service List Project, a collection of 7 free corpus-based word lists designed to meet the needs of 2nd language learners, before going on to demonstrate our large and growing collection of free online tools for teaching and learning these words as well as using the wordlists for content creation and text simplification. All tools are based on pedagogically-sound principles of language learning including gamification, spaced-repetition, use of authentic materials and data-driven learning.
Brief Bio: Dr Browne is Professor of Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Meiji Gakuin University and creator of their EFL teacher-training program as well as Director of the MA and PhD Programs and Director of the New General Service List Project. He has been in Japan since 1985 and actually served as the first National Chairman of the JET Program back in 1987. Though ancient by most standards he is still quite active with distance biking, running, gym workouts and long walks with his dog.
